Daycare in Kasaragod
In Kasaragod (in the North of Kerala) pesticides were used years ago to rid cashew plantations of pests. The pesticides were spread over the plantations by helicopter. Of course, these pesticides ended up not only on the plantations, but also in the water and air around them. It seems very likely that these pesticides are the cause of the high number of physically and/or mentally disabled children born in this region. These children cannot go to school and are often left to fend for themselves when parents go to work. Some children lie on the floor in a room day after day.
A daycare center was started in 2017: Navajeevana Special School. The children in this shelter receive various therapies (physiotherapy, speech therapy) and it is ensured that they receive a full meal. Initially, approximately 25 children could go to day care. With a contribution from the Jianderfonds, additional materials for therapies were purchased (such as an exercise bike, running belt, drawing supplies and tables and chairs). As a result, almost 50 children can now go to day care.
However, there are more children who want to use daycare, but the building is too small for that. Partly due to a contribution from the Jianderfonds, a larger building is now being built. Daycare is very important for the development of the children. Children who previously lay on the ground all day can now walk. Children who could not speak can now count to ten. Sometimes even in English. The therapies make it possible for the children to gain better self-esteem and to participate in society again.
